Apple launches watch for kids

New Delhi: On Wednesday, Apple, the tech giant, made a significant move by launching its kids’ watch in India. This innovative watch not only allows easy texting and calling but also offers robust activity monitoring, making it a unique and beneficial device for children.

The company claimed in a statement that the Apple Watch is useful for kids “even if they don’t have their own iPhone.”

For parents who are hesitant to give their children mobile phones, the Apple Watch offers a convenient solution. It allows for easy communication and activity monitoring, providing a sense of reassurance about their children’s safety.

“Apple Watch For Your Kids is available in India, on cellular models of Apple Watch Series 4 or later or Apple Watch SE, paired with iPhone 8 or later running the latest watchOS and iOS,” Apple said.

“It brings communication, health, fitness, and safety features of Apple Watch to kids and other family members who do not yet have an iPhone,” the company added.

A parent’s iPhone can set it up, and calling and texting are simple.

Children’s whereabouts are trackable for parents, and all personal information is encrypted for security.

Parents have full control over the Apple Watch’s communication features. They can approve all contacts, ensuring their children’s safety and responsible use of the device, which empowers them to manage their children’s technology use.

The Apple Watch offers a range of vital health and safety features, such as Emergency SOS, that are not only beneficial for kids but also for the entire family. Additionally, functions like Maps, Siri, Alarms, and the App Store enable users to be more independent without the need for an iPhone.

“Kids using Apple Watch For Your Kids will have their own phone number through a separate cellular plan, and by using their own Apple ID,” Apple said, adding that a wireless service plan for Apple Watch is required for cellular service, currently available through Jio in India.

The children can also use the calendar feature to follow schedules and family events, learn to manage tasks with reminders, and view photo albums synced from their guardian’s iPhones.

Kids can download third-party apps directly on the device using the App Store on Apple Watch, while parents can manage what is available for download.
