New Delhi: According to sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Kyiv in August for the first time since Russia invaded the country on February 24, 2022.

High-level negotiations between the two countries took place in July, including phone conversations between NSA Ajit Doval and his Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Yermak and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his colleague Dmytro Kuleba.

June saw PM Modi meet President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine during the G7 Summit in Italy.

EAM Jaishankar stated that he “spoke about furthering our bilateral relationship” on the social networking platform X.

Zelensky congratulated PM Modi on his third consecutive victory in the general elections on June 4 and invited him to visit the nation devastated by war.

PM Modi and Zelensky spoke over the phone in March to discuss measures to improve the relationship between India and Ukraine.

In addition to restating India’s people-first policy, PM Modi had promised Zelensky that his country would continue to make all efforts to promote a peaceful resolution.

Earlier this month, during his two-day visit to Moscow, PM Modi emphasised that “there is no solution on the battlefield.” The path ahead is one of discourse and diplomacy.

According to the prime minister, India has always demanded adherence to the UN Charter, which includes maintaining national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
