New Delhi: On Sunday, the Ministry of Defence announced the launch of a monumental nationwide tree plantation drive, a fitting tribute to the 78th Independence Day event on August 15.

Over 15 lakh saplings will be planted by the ministry.

The Ministry of Defence said, “The plantation drive is part of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ (A tree in the name of mother) campaign and will be conducted through the three Services and associated organisations such as DRDO, Defence PSUs, CGDA, NCC, Sainik Schools, and Ordnance factories.”

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) held a plantation drive in the nation’s capital on Saturday as part of the same initiative.

Approximately 1,11,111 saplings were planted in Delhi’s green spaces and parks. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, deeply moved by the cause, also participated by planting a seedling at the ecological spot along the Yamuna River in New Delhi in honour of his mother.

The Vice President also made a heartfelt plea to the public, underlining their crucial role in the success of the environmental protection movement.

He further urged each member of parliament to plant 200 trees or more to help preserve the environment.

On June 5, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the campaign on the occasion of World Environment Day. He also asked everyone to plant a tree in honour of mothers in India and around the world.

Rajnath Singh, the minister of defence, planted a tree in remembrance of his mother as part of the campaign. He urged everyone to support the fight to preserve the environment and actively participate in making it a more vibrant and successful movement.
