New Delhi: To learn firsthand about Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the 50kg women’s wrestling competition at the Olympics in Paris, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called PT Usha, President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

The Prime Minister also inquired about India’s choices and requested that the head of the IOA investigate every possibility of supporting Vinesh’s case. If it would benefit the wrestler, he also asked PT Usha to lodge a vigorous protest against the disqualification.

The popular Indian wrestler suffered a severe blow on Wednesday morning when it was announced that she had been disqualified due to weighing a few grams over the allowed limit.

The Indian grappler will be ranked last in accordance with United World Wrestling rules following the disqualification.

Vinesh, a 48 kg world champion, competed in her third Olympics. An injury kept her from winning gold in the Rio Olympics in 2016. Vanesa Kaladzinskaya defeated her in the 53kg quarterfinals of the Tokyo Olympics.
