New Delhi: According to the government, India’s collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) on medical device manufacturing solidifies its status as a frontrunner in healthcare innovation.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, stated that although we make our own devices, we must make them in large enough quantities to satisfy the increasing demand.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) in Kerala’s Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Science and Technology (SCTIMST) and the global health organisation have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in support of this.

“The Ministry of Science and Technology is proud to be a part of the MoU as it allows SCTIMST and Department of Science and Technology to enter into a partnership with global entrepreneurs, licensing the technologies and creating revenue generation through royalty,’ said the minister.

Dr Singh emphasised that this collaboration enhances India’s standing as a pioneer in healthcare innovation by encouraging domestic manufacturing and lowering import dependency. This echoes Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demand for “Atmanirbhar Bharat” during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The minister added that it helps create a workforce with a high expertise level, improving the country’s manufacturing capacity.

The minister added that SCTIMST’s technology is a component of the quickly developing medical diagnostics ecosystem and highlighted top-notch facilities associated with the development of technologies, including in-vitro testing, genomics, precision medicine, and vaccine manufacture.

The minister conveyed his optimism about the engagement with the WHO, stating that it will lead to increased technological advancements, innovations, and global partnerships.

Dr. Singh said that with an emphasis on “Technology for Medical Diagnosis,” this collaboration enhances India’s standing as a pioneer in healthcare innovation.
