United Nations: According to his Deputy Spokesperson, Farhan Haq, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has encouraged the interim administration of Bangladesh to consider the opinions of minorities and uphold human rights as it prepares for parliamentary elections.

Asserting his support for the people of Bangladesh, Guterres  “welcomes efforts to restore calm and organise parliamentary elections in Bangladesh, with the support of an interim government”, he said on Monday.

“He urges the interim government in the coming weeks to continue to make every effort to be inclusive, including by taking into account the voices of women, youth, and people across the country, as well as that of minority and indigenous communities, as the country moves towards parliamentary elections,” Haq said.

Following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation as prime minister and her subsequent exile in India, Nobel Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus assumed the leadership of the interim administration.

According to reports from Bangladesh, after her administration fell and several Hindus were slain, Hindus were attacked, and their homes and businesses suffered damage at several locations.

A leader of the Hindu-Bouddha-Christian Oikya Parishad, a minority organisation, Rana Dasgupta, claims that two Hindu deaths and approximately 100 injuries have occurred.

According to him, there were 97 incidents of anti-Hindu violence last week, and at least 10 temples were attacked.

Around 300 individuals are said to have died during the violent student demonstrations against Hasina.

Guterres reiterates his call “for a full, independent, impartial, and transparent investigation into all acts of violence”, Haq said.
