London: According to officials on Tuesday, the UK Police have detained over 1,000 persons in relation to the violent, looting, and arson disturbances that have occurred in Britain over the past two weeks.

The UK riots started after the murders of three young girls in the English town of Southport in the north, according to Reuters. The attack on July 29 was mistakenly attributed to a Muslim immigrant due to false information found online.

Cities across England and Northern Ireland experienced violent outbursts, but since last week, when attempts to identify individuals responsible were intensified, there have been fewer incidents of unrest.

Many have been swiftly jailed, with some receiving long sentences.

In its most recent report, the National Police Chiefs’ Council stated that 5,75 people had been charged and 1,024 people had been arrested nationwide.

Two of the people detained are an 11-year-old boy from Belfast and a 69-year-old man charged with mischief in Liverpool.

A 13-year-old girl pleaded a guilty plea to violent disorder at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court, according to the prosecution. The youngster was seen on July 31 punching and kicking the door of an asylum-seeking guesthouse, as reported by Reuters.

“This alarming incident will have caused genuine fear amongst people who were being targeted by these thugs — and it is particularly distressing to learn that such a young girl participated in this violent disorder,” prosecutor Thomas Power said.

The last time large-scale riots occurred in Britain was in 2011, following days of street unrest following the police shooting death of a Black man.

Prompt and severe legal action contributed to the suppression of the 2011 unrest, during which some 4,000 people were taken into custody over a few weeks.
