New Delhi: Congress leader and MP Rahul Gandhi, in a poignant moment, reached the hallowed grounds of Veer Bhoomi this morning to pay tribute to his father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, on his birth anniversary, which falls on August 20. It was a moment of collective reverence as many other Congress Party leaders joined Rahul Gandhi in paying tribute to the late Rajiv Gandhi.

On May 21, 1991, while campaigning for the upcoming general elections, Rajiv Gandhi’s life was tragically cut short. He was assassinated by a female suicide bomber who was a member of LTTE, the Sri Lankan terrorist outfit.

Rajiv Gandhi, a former airline pilot, served as the Prime Minister of India from 1984 to 1989. He assumed office after the assassination of his mother, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, to become, at the age of 40, the youngest Indian prime minister to lead the country.
