New Delhi: According to people close to Vinesh Phogat, she is expected to run in the next Haryana Assembly elections.
Vinesh had already declared, though, that she would not become involved in politics.
As per the latest report, some political parties are trying hard to “convince” her.
Vinesh missed the opportunity to win a gold medal in the women’s freestyle 50kg category at the Paris Olympics after being disqualified from the final for being 100gm overweight.
Vinesh was greeted with a warm and rousing welcome in the national capital and her village of Balali, Sonipat, on Saturday. She was garlanded by Congress Member of Parliament Deepender Hooda and other members of his family at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, a testament to the strong sense of community and support she has.
However, which party Vinesh is going to join is yet to be confirmed.
“Yes, why not? In the Haryana assembly, you will likely see Vinesh Phogat vs Babita Phogat and Bajrang Punia vs Yogeshwar Dutt. Some political parties are trying to convince her,” sources close to the Phogat family told IANS when asked about the 2024 Olympic finalist wrestler’s (future) plans.
Despite the early hours, a sizable crowd, including Vinesh’s relatives, friends, and admirers, greeted her with enthusiastic applause as she emerged from the airport. The legendary wrestler was moved to tears by the outpouring of love and support.
Emotions were running high as people cheered outside the airport. Sakshi Malikkh and Bajrang Punia, who retired from wrestling last year, were among the first to welcome Vinesh home.
Both Sakshi and Vinesh have had difficult times in their professions; in a touching moment, they embraced and sobbed together, bearing the burden of their hardships.
“Our fight has not ended, and the fight will continue, and I pray to god that the truth will prevail,” Vinesh said on Saturday.
Vinesh expressed her profound sadness on Friday about not making it to the Olympic podium and connected her personal letdown to the larger fight for women’s rights in India. This is a cause she supported during her demonstrations against the former head of the wrestling federation, where she spoke out against gender discrimination and unequal opportunities for female athletes.
Despite her earlier decision to retire following her disqualification from the Paris Olympics, Vinesh left the door somewhat open for a potential comeback to the sport in a three-page letter that was released on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Friday night.
Despite the team’s best efforts, Vinesh’s attempt to make weight in time for the weigh-in was unsuccessful, and she was disqualified from the gold medal match. On Wednesday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected her petition for a shared silver medal. However, Vinesh’s resilience and determination in the face of such adversity are truly inspiring.
