New Delhi: When the police brought one of the three accused—who had been charged with gang rape—to the location on Saturday morning to recreate the crime scene, he allegedly jumped into a pond while wearing handcuffs. The victim was a 14-year-old girl from the Nagaon region of Assam.

Taffazul Islam, the prime accused, was escorted to the murder scene for a crime scene recreation after being taken into custody on Friday, according to the police. Then, according to reports, he leapt into a pond to escape from police custody.

On Thursday night, the 14-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by three people as she was making her way home from the tuition centre.

The victim was attacked and gang-raped while riding a bicycle, according to the police.

Onlookers discovered the girl near the pond, and they quickly took her to a hospital in the region.

The girl was left semi-conscious at the scene of the crime by the accused for over an hour before nearby residents rescued her.

According to the attending doctors, the victim is currently stable and receiving hospital treatment.

Acting quickly, the police detained two people they believed may have been connected to the event.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma issued a dire warning in the meanwhile, threatening severe punishment for anybody responsible for the horrible murder.

He has also directed the Director General of Police to race to the location of the crime to conduct a prompt inquiry.

The Chief Minister took to social media platform X and wrote, “The horrific incident at Dhing, involving a minor, is a crime against humanity and has struck our collective conscience. We will NOT SPARE anyone and BRING the perpetrators to JUSTICE. I’ve directed the DGP of Assam Police to visit the site and ensure swift action against such monsters.”

Locals in the Dhing neighbourhood became incensed by the incident and closed their stores and other commercial spaces for the day to protest.

The administration has also drawn criticism over the incident from the All Assam Students Union (AASU).
