Kolkata: An official stated that the Kolkata Police have prolonged prohibitory orders near the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for another week until August 31.

Vineet Goyal, Kolkata Police Commissioner, released a statement on Saturday confirming the extension of Section 163 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) to include the hospital.

Initially issued on August 18, the restrictions prohibit meetings and gatherings of more than five persons in the designated area.

The prohibitory orders apply to the region extending from Belgachia Road-J K Mitra crossing to various areas of the Shyambazar five-point crossing belt in north Kolkata.

The extension aims to avoid riots and maintain peace and order in the area.

The decision comes after continued discontent over the recent rape and murder of a female doctor at the hospital, which has caused widespread disquiet.

The order states that any person who violates these prohibitions would face penalties under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Polygraph tests

The process of carrying out polygraph tests on six people in connection with the rape and murder of a woman junior doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College & Hospital began Saturday afternoon in Kolkata, according to sources familiar with the situation.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has scheduled polygraph tests for six people, including Sandip Ghosh, the former and controversial principal of RG Kar Hospital.

Four postgraduate medical students at RG Kar Hospital will also be tested because they were present in the same building on hospital grounds the night the rape and murder occurred.

The sixth person to be tested is a civic volunteer, a close associate of Sanjay Roy, the lone arrested accused in the case.

A special CBI team arrived from New Delhi to conduct the test.

According to sources, the polygraph test for accused Sanjay Roy, who is now in judicial custody at Presidency Central Correctional Home in South Kolkata, could be done later in the day.

The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) remanded Roy to 14 days of judicial prison on Friday.

According to sources, completing the full process would take time because the polygraph exams of all those involved will not be completed concurrently.

As per protocol, earlier this week, the CBI filed an appeal with the ACJM court in Sealdah, central Kolkata.

In such instances, the second stage of the protocol is to obtain the agreement of the individuals who will be tested.

After obtaining the consent of the six people, the ACJM authorised the CBI to conduct the test.

The results of the polygraph tests cannot be used as evidence against someone in court, and they are simply a means for the investigating agency to obtain the truth.
