New Delhi: Apple plans to create 5-6 lakh jobs (direct and indirect) in the next 1-2 years, leaning on strong local production as iPhone manufacturing factories in India establish new export records month after month.

According to industry sources, while iPhone exports continue to reach around $1 billion per month thanks to the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, the tech giant employs approximately 2 lakh people, the majority of whom are women, across its supply chain, which includes vendors and component suppliers.

Tata Electronics, which has two Apple factories, is the largest employer in the Apple ecosystem, alongside Foxconn and Pegatron.

Mobile manufacturing has been a driving force in job development over the last decade, as the government seeks to make India a worldwide manufacturing hub.

According to the government, over 2 lakh individuals have found work in Apple’s ecosystem alone, and there is plenty of room for expansion.

During the peak festival season, the country’s iPhone manufacturing will directly hire over 10,000 individuals. Apple is increasing its investment in India, and it is reportedly in advanced talks with Tata Group’s Titan Company and Murugappa Group to build subcomponents for phone camera modules.

Apple plans to produce more than 50 million iPhones in India each year, shifting some production away from China.

iPhone shipments from India increased substantially to $12.1 billion in 2023-24 from $6.27 billion in 2022-23. Overall, the company’s India activities were valued at $23.5 billion in the previous fiscal year (FY24), bolstering the country’s position as a viable alternative to China and Vietnam in electronics production.

Meanwhile, Tata Group is preparing to open a new iPhone assembly plant in the country, which is expected to open around the festive season. Tata’s iPhone is being made in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. The iPhone plant is planned to employ more than 50,000 people, the majority of whom will be women.

Apple has already started providing training to thousands of workers at its manufacturing in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu (managed by Foxconn), in preparation for the launch of the latest iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models in the country following their global debut this autumn.

The business plans to make its ‘Make in India’ iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max variants accessible in the nation immediately following the worldwide launch.
