New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, virtually took stock of the recovery and rehabilitation work in Kerala’s Wayanad on Sunday, outlining a few methods to restore people’s livelihoods and improve their means of income in the aftermath of disastrous landslides.

The Congress MP from Wayanad, in particular, emphasised the importance of revitalising tourism in Wayanad and dispelling the myth that the entire district was in disarray after massive landslides on July 30.

“Once the rains cease, it is imperative that we make a concerted effort to revitalise tourism in the area and encourage people to visit. It is important to note that the landslide was localised to a specific area in Wayanad, not the entire region,” the Congress leader said.

Rahul Gandhi stated that Wayanad was an excellent tourist destination, with breathtaking scenery that made it a tourist hotspot. He also asked everyone to work together to revive and restore tourism in the landslide-hit Wayanad.

Former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi used a video conference to brief Congress officers on the relief and reconstruction efforts in the landslide-hit district. Top Congress officials, including KC Venugopal and Priyanka Gandhi, participated in the virtual discussion.

He went on to say that Wayanad will soon be ready to welcome tourists from all over the country and the world with its natural beauty and that this region will tremendously assist the people in recovering their livelihoods.

He also praised all sectors of society, particularly social welfare agencies, for stepping forward to assist Wayanad in its time of need.

“Wayanad is steadily recovering from the devastation caused by the tragic landslides. While there is still much to be done, it is heartening to witness people from all communities and organisations coming together in relief efforts,” he said.

“As we have done in the past, let us come together once again to support our brothers and sisters in beautiful Wayanad,” he added.

Notably, catastrophic landslides rocked Wayanad in the early hours of July 30, causing damage, destruction, and displacement of a considerable number of people. About 350 casualties were reported, and thousands were left homeless. Wayanad’s worst-damaged areas included Chooralmala, Mundakkai, and Vellarimala villages in the Meppadi region.
