Maha Government: Following Dharavi inhabitants’ overwhelming support in Mumbai for an ongoing state government survey on the $3 billion redevelopment project, numerous NGOs working in the world’s largest slum have promised their assistance.

At least eight non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and citizen welfare associations met with Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) CEO S.V.R. Srinivas and expressed their support for the state-led survey currently being conducted in the area.

The NGOs also wrote to the Dharavi Redevelopment Project/Slum Rehabilitation Authority (DRP/SRA), which oversees the Adani Group’s redevelopment project, to express their support for the survey.

In their letters, NGOs like Global Giving Foundation and All India Police Jan Seva Sangathna asked questions like the period of free flat maintenance to rehabilitate the Dharavi citizens. The Enlighten Foundation said in its letter that the residents and the commercial premises owners are not against the project or the survey, and the survey is “opposed only by a handful of people who are against redevelopment and have vested interests.”

The survey, which aims to collect data from lakhs of individuals, is a significant step towards the state government’s determination of their eligibility for rehabilitation under the projected redevelopment project. Its scale underscores the importance of the project.

The survey began on March 18 and covered almost 11,000 tenements with door-to-door inspections. Thevar Samajam, which represents Dharavi’s largest Tamil population, stated: “We reiterate our support for you and DRP and would like to state that we are a part of the project and redevelopment and would like to be part of history.”

The survey is being carried out by the state government’s DRP/SRA in collaboration with the Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Ltd (DRPPL), a joint venture between the Maharashtra government and the Adani group.

Dharavi, with a geographical area of just over 2.39 square kilometres, is Asia’s largest slum. The proposed redevelopment project, led by the Adani Group, aims to transform this area into a vibrant and sustainable urban ecosystem. The project not only promises to provide a better quality of life to its over one million residents but also to create an unparalleled model of sustainable living and innovation in the heart of Mumbai. The ongoing survey is a crucial step in this ambitious project, as it will help identify the needs and preferences of the Dharavi community, ensuring that the redevelopment is truly inclusive and beneficial to all. Tenement holders will receive a 350-square-foot house as part of the rehabilitation project, which is 17% larger than any other SRA initiative in Mumbai.
