New York: No.2 seed Aryna Sabalenka has achieved a rare feat, becoming the first woman to reach back-to-back US Open finals since Serena Williams did so in 2018 and 2019. This unique accomplishment solidifies her position in the tennis world. Sabalenka has reached all four hard-court Grand Slam finals during the last two seasons.

The 26-year-old former World No.1 clinched a spot in her second straight US Open final with a gritty 6-3, 7-6(2) victory over home favourite Emma Navarro in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Sabalenka, who finished runner-up to Coco Gauff at last year’s US Open, faced a tough challenge in the semi-finals against surging American Navarro. The match, which lasted 90 minutes, saw Sabalenka fend off a determined Navarro, who was contesting her first Grand Slam semifinal. This victory was a testament to Sabalenka’s resilience and skill.

Sabalenka has dropped only one set on her way into Saturday’s finals. And she’s bidding to win her second consecutive tournament after taking the title at the Cincinnati Open—where she beat Pegula in the finals—before arriving in New York, according to WTA stats.

During her on-court interview, an elated Sabalenka teased the roaring crowd for their delayed support of her.

Her comment, “Oh, now you guys cheer for me,” was a light-hearted acknowledgement of the challenges of competing against an American in Ashe, where the home crowd’s support can be overwhelming, as quoted by the tournament website.

Two days ago, she promised free drinks for their support. “Margaritas for everyone from Dobel Tequila!” she promised, laughing.

Sabalenka is now just one win away from etching her name in the history books as the first woman to win both hard-court Grand Slam titles in the same year since Angelique Kerber’s 2016 triumph. This potential historic achievement adds a significant weight to her upcoming match.
