New York US Open: Aryna Sabalenka, the No.2 seed, won her third Grand Slam singles title and first in New York City, defeating American Jessica Pegula 7-5, 7-5.

Despite leading 3-0 in the second set, Sabalenka was pushed to her limits by Pegula’s dramatic rally. Pegula claimed five straight games, forcing a third set. However, Sabalenka’s resilience shone through as she responded with four successive games, ultimately capturing her maiden US Open singles title.

Sabalenka’s victory became her the first woman to win both hard-court majors in a single season since Angelique Kerber of Germany did so in 2016.

Sabalenka can also claim the title of “Queen of Hard Courts.” Her previous two major victories were won on Australian Open cement in January this year and in 2023.

Sabalenka has won 11 of her 13 titles on hard courts outside the majors. And the No. 2 seed is on a 12-match hard-court winning streak, having won the Cincinnati Open two weeks ago, defeating Pegula in the final.

Sabalenka will stay world No. 2, while despite losing in the quarterfinals, Iga Swiatek will retain her No. 1 ranking.

While Pegula did not win the trophy, she will achieve a new career-high WTA ranking following her finest major run. On Monday, the American will jump three places to No. 3 in the world.
