New Delhi: Saeed Ajmal, a former Pakistan off-spinner, believes Pakistan and India should play cricket matches in their respective countries because the two countries have a strong bond.

Pakistan last visited India in 2012/13 for a three-match T20I series and three ODIs. India cricketers last visited Pakistan in 2008, when the Asia Cup was hosted there. The two teams last played a Test series in 2007. This historical rivalry, which has produced some of the most memorable moments in cricket, is now limited to multi-nation competitions due to the decline in bilateral relations.

“Even if the India versus Pakistan match happens on the moon, it will be huge. There is a lot of love between India and Pakistan, and we must go to each other’s countries,” said Ajmal on the sidelines of the GloFans High School Cricket Cup launch that will take place in Sharjah and Ajman in November.

Ajmal represented Pakistan from 2008 to 2015, with 178 wickets in 35 Tests. He also bagged 184 wickets in 113 One-Day Internationals and 85 in 64 Twenty-20 Internationals. Additionally, he batted for the survival of Test cricket, which is under threat due to the rise of T20 leagues. “There is a need to promote long-format (test) cricket.” Those who play the longest format might choose any other format.”

Ajmal was generous in his admiration for today’s top batters. “I like Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Babar Azam, and Rohit Sharma, they are good players.” He also lauded fast-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who was Player of the Tournament in India’s triumph at the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup. “Bumrah is a very intelligent bowler, and intelligence is required with speed,” he concluded.
