Northampton: India’s spinner Yuzvendra Chahal took five wickets on Day 2 of the ongoing County Championship match between Northamptonshire and Derbyshire, putting his team ahead in the four-day game.

Northamptonshire won the toss and decided to bat in the match on Monday. Prithvi Shaw, the side’s second Indian, opened the batting alongside Gus Miller but was unable to help his teammate for long as he was caught on only his second delivery after hitting the first for four runs, leaving him in trouble. The home side was struggling at 89/6 until Saif Zaib’s 90-run inning, combined with Justin Broad’s 45, powered their first innings score to 219.

Chahal’s wickets helped his team reclaim control of the game after scoring a par score in the opening innings. The leg spinner claimed the crucial wicket of Italian hitter Wayne Madsen, who was extending his innings to 42 runs. Chahal’s wicket-taking skills helped Northamptonshire bowl out Derbyshire for 165, despite the latter being at 150 after losing four wickets at one point.

Northamptonshire made no mistake with the lifeline they received, despite yet another poor start by Prithvi Shaw, who was removed for two runs in the third innings, finishing Day 2 on 178 for five. The hosts lead by 232 runs, due to contributions from Gus Miller (42 runs), James Sales (40 runs), and Rob Keogh, who is at 46*.
