Kolkata: Suvankar Sarkar, who succeeds senior politician Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, was chosen West Bengal Chief by the Congress on Saturday evening.

“The president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) has been relieved from his chair of AICC secretary. The party appreciates the contributions of the outgoing PCC President Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury,” Congress said.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a senior Congress leader and five-time Lok Sabha member, was defeated in the 2014 Lok Sabha election from his Baharampur constituency in Murshidabad district by Trinamool’s celebrity candidate, former Indian cricket team player Yusuf Pathan.

The replacement of Chowdhury by Sarkar will allow the Congress high command to form a friendly and workable alliance with the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal.

Chowdhury is a staunch supporter of the anti-Trinamool Congress faction in the state, but Sarkar has always taken a balanced stance on the Trinamool.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s disputes with the party leadership over the party’s connection with the Trinamool Congress had been brewing for some time.

He has often expressed his desire to form an electoral alliance with the Left Front, led by the CPI(M).
