New Delhi: India’s commitment to sustainable development received a boost on Thursday when the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, authorised the country’s membership in the “International Energy Efficiency Hub.”

The Cabinet’s approval of India’s membership in the International Energy Efficiency Hub through signing a Letter of Intent is a testament to the country’s proactive approach to environmental sustainability. The goal is to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 and expand renewable energy production to 500 GW by 2030.

The International Energy Efficiency Hub is a global platform that fosters collaboration and promotes energy efficiency worldwide. A Cabinet communique said the move solidifies India’s commitment to sustainable development and aligns with its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

As a member of the Hub, India will have the unique opportunity to collaborate with other member states, share its own experience, and learn from worldwide best practices. The Cabinet also stated that the government will contribute to global efforts to combat climate change by encouraging energy-efficient technology and practices. By joining the Hub, India will gain access to a broad network of experts and resources, allowing it to strengthen its domestic energy-saving projects. Sixteen nations have joined the Hub: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, the European Commission, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Luxembourg, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

India Condemns USCIRF for Peddling ‘Motivated Narrative’

According to the government, India’s participation in the Hub is a big step towards a more sustainable future.

PM Modi recently highlighted India’s unique position as the only G20 country to have met the pledge made at the Paris Climate Change Summit in 2015, far before the deadline. This early achievement is a testament to India’s commitment to a sustainable future and should fill us all with pride and optimism. The country has amended its targets to lower the intensity of its GDP’s emissions to 45 percent by 2030, down from 55 percent in 2005, and to build 50 percent of its electric power capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources.
