Mumbai: Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan expressed joy and thanked the Prime Minister of India for giving Marathi, along with four other languages, the Classical Language Status.

In a message, the Governor has said:

“This day will remain etched in the history of Maharashtra and that of the sweet Marathi language.

The due recognition of the language of Sant Dnyaneshwar, Sant Chakradhar Swami, Sant Tukaram, and many other Saints and Social Reformers of Maharashtra—the mother tongue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Mahatma Phule, Savitribai Phule, Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, Lokmanya Tilak, Bharat Ratna, Dr B R Ambedkar, and numerous freedom fighters and revolutionaries made the decision all the more special.

I am grateful to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India for giving Marathi the much-awaited classical language status.

I am also happy that Pali and Prakrit,  Bengali and Assamese too have been accorded Classical language status.

Indeed, I am sure after the Cabinet decision on recognising them as Classical Languages, more people, especially the youth and the children will be encouraged to learn, read and speak these languages.
