New Delhi: On Tuesday, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi greeted India’s brave air warriors on Air Force Day, which falls on October 8.

“Air Force Day greetings to our brave air warriors. Our Air Force is admired for their courage and professionalism. Their role in protecting our nation is extremely commendable.”

Commemorating the day, the IAF said that Air Force Day serves as a reminder to honour the bravery and dedication of IAF personnel who protect India’s sovereignty and engage in a wide range of operations, including disaster relief, humanitarian aid, and peacekeeping missions.

“On this day, we pay tribute to the bravery and dedication of IAF personnel who protect India’s sovereignty,” states the IAF.

The motto of the Indian Air Force (Touch the sky with Glory) has been taken from the eleventh chapter of the Gita, the Discourse given by Lord Krishna to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra during the Great War of Mahabharata.

The British Empire founded the Indian Air Force, or Bharatiya Vayu Sena, on October 8, 1932. The first operational squadron was formed on April 1, 1933, with six RAF-trained officers and 19 Havai Sepoys (air warriors). The aircraft inventory included four Westland Wapiti IIA army cooperation biplanes at Drigh Road, which served as the “A” Flight nucleus of the projected No.1 (Army Co-operation) Squadron.

The Indian Air Force gave up its “Royal” prefix after India became a Republic within the British Commonwealth in January 1950.
