Mumbai: Former Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata, who was critically ill, passed away on Wednesday after a prolonged illness. He was 86.

He was in intensive care at a Mumbai hospital. Tata stated on Monday that he was undergoing standard medical tests due to his age and associated medical issues.

In 2008, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian decoration, which is given for exceptional and distinguished service. This followed the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian distinction, which he received in 2000 for his distinguished service of a high order.

He joined Tata in 1961 and worked on the Tata Steel shop floor. When J R D Tata retired in 1991, he succeeded him as chairman of Tata Sons. Under his leadership, the Tata Group underwent a remarkable transformation, acquiring Tetley, Jaguar Land Rover, and Corus. This strategic expansion aimed to position Tata as a global player, moving beyond its primarily India-focused operations.

His contribution was beyond the boardroom. He was one of the world’s top philanthropists, donating between 60 and 65 percent of his earnings to charity. His generosity was particularly evident during the Covid pandemic when he donated 1500 crore to the PM fund.

In a post on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi fondly recounted his interactions with Tata: “My mind is filled with countless interactions with Shri Ratan Tata Ji. I would meet him frequently in Gujarat when I was the CM. We would exchange views on diverse issues. I found his perspectives very enriching.”

Billionaire Gautam Adani mourned his loss on X: “India has lost a giant, a visionary who redefined modern India’s path. Ratan Tata wasn’t just a business leader – he embodied the spirit of India with integrity, compassion and an unwavering commitment to the greater good. Legends like him never fade away. Om Shanti.”

Industrialist Harsh Goenka posted on X:” The Clock has stopped ticking. The Titan Passes Away.”

Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi remembered him as a “Man with a vision.”

Union Minister Amit Shah remembered him as a “True Nationalist” who had selflessly dedicated his life to the development of India.

His passing is being seen as a passing of an era.
