Army Chief Embarks on a Trip to Japan; Significant Step in Defence Cooperation

New Delhi: General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), a seasoned leader with a wealth of experience, has left to visit Japan from October 14th to 17th, 2024. His visit marks a significant step forward in India-Japan defence cooperation, a testament to the competence of the Indian Army leadership.

General Upendra Dwivedi’s visit to Japan is not just a diplomatic formality, but a strategic move to strengthen military cooperation between India and Japan. This visit holds the promise of exploring new avenues of collaboration, fostering a brighter future for India-Japan relations.

On arrival, General Dwivedi will first meet with Sibi George, the Indian Ambassador to Japan, at the Embassy of India in Tokyo to discuss India-Japan relations.

Next, the COAS will meet with Japan’s senior military leadership at the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in Ichigaya. The discussions are scheduled with Gen Yoshida Yoshihide, Chief of Staff of the Joint Self-defence Force; Gen Morishita Yasunori, Chief of Staff of the Japan Ground Self-defence Force (JGSDF); and Mr Ishikawa Takeshi, Commissioner of the Acquisition, Technology, and Logistic Agency (ATLA). The negotiations will lead to deeper military collaboration between India and Japan.
As a mark of respect and honour, the Army Chief will also visit the MoD Memorial in Ichigaya, where he will receive a Guard of Honour from the JGSDF. The programme also includes meetings with senior JGSDF officials and a visit to the National Institute of Defence Studies.

General Upendra Dwivedi’s visit to Japan also includes a trip to the Fuji School, where he will be accompanied by General Morishita Yasunori, Chief of Staff of the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force. During his visit, the COAS will engage in a discussion with Lt Gen Kodama Yasuyuki, the Commanding General of Fuji School, and will be briefed on the School’s operations. He will also have the opportunity to view an Equipment and Facility Display.

Finally, the General will visit Hiroshima, a city with a profound history, where he will lay a wreath and pay floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi’s statue. This act of respect is a poignant reminder of the values that bind India and Japan.
