Chennai, Dec 6: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, who passed away here late on Monday night, was laid to rest at the Marina Beach here on Tuesday.

The AIADMK leader was laid to rest in a sandalwood coffin, next to the memorial of her mentor and AIADMK founder, MG Ramachandran at Chennai's Marina Beach. The pair starred together in several blockbuster Tamil films before shifting to politics. Ms Jayalalithaa's burial, rather than a cremation, is seen as in keeping with the Dravidian movement, rationalist and pivoted against Brahmin rituals. For decades, Dravidian politics have governed Tamil Nadu.

Last rites were performed by her long-time companion Sasikala Natarajan.

The former chief minister was buried with full state honours. Jayalalithaa, 68, died at 11.30 on Monday night, after suffering a cardiac arrest the day before.

Jayalalithaa was given the guard of honour and paid tribute with full state honours.

Thousands of policemen stood guard; however, the media was not allowed at the Marina Beach. VVIPs including Rahul Gandhi and several Chief Ministers were present.
