Jharkhand top cops desertIPS to join politics

Are corrupt malpractices at high places and arbitrary postings behind their desperate move?

A couple of years back a movie produced by a former IPS officer YP Singh has exposed the chinks in the state administration. The movie has stripped the certain indiscretions of thepoliticos and bureaucrats thatpeeve cops a lot.

But the flick didn’t show cops deserting the elite job to jump into the same cesspool they considered dirty – politics.

Scores of former IPS officers are contesting elections in Jharkhand. They are sitting Jamshedpur MP Ajay Kumar, Amitabh Chaudhary, BD Ram, Subodh Prasad and RameshwarOraon.

Oraonhad quit the elite police service in 2004 to join the Congress. He won from Lohardagga and became a minister in the union government. Lost mandate in 2009,he is now the Congress candidate from Lohardagga.Similarly, the former director general of police BD Ram joined the BharatiyaJanata Party and is the candidate from Palamau.

The another high profile cop, Amitabh Chaudhary, post his voluntary retirement from the IPS last year, chose to contest from Ranchi on a JVM-P ticket. Also the president of the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA),Chaudhary, is pitted against the former union minister Subodh Kant Sahay.Subodh Prasad, a formerDIG of police, is contesting from Godda on All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) ticket.

All of them at one time or the other singed by political decisions, have pledged to
serve the Jharkhand people. The transfers and postings which have become lucrative business in government lexicon entail mindboggling money that a senior IPS officer has to pay to the concerned minister, to ‘purchase’ the plum post in industrial cities like Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad and Bokaro.

Now they themselves becoming part of the system their every acts required to be scrutinized.‘I could’ve also become the police commissioner of Mumbai and had easily earned Rs100-200 crore and enjoyed,’ said the former Mumbai top cop and now a lawyer, YP Singh.
