Sex education no longer an anathema: Sexpert

Sex is no longer a social pariah, believes Mumbai’s sexologist and counselor Dr Mahinder Watsa.

Once asked by a sex maniac, "Though I have perfect relations with my wife, I have started deriving sexual pleasure with my pet goat in Karjat, called Rameela…Is it ok to continue? The 'sexpert' wearing mischievous smile answered: "Why not ask Rameela."

Felicitated by the Family Planning Association of India for his longstanding contribution to sexual health, the 90-year-old gynaecologist said, sex is precursor to a healthy family life.

Stressing on sex education Dr Watsa further said, "The government objects to sex education in schools, despite surveys revealing that children are getting sexually active at younger ages. A recent survey in Pune showed that sex workers were less active during exams and became busy right after the exams."

Way back in 1976, he wrote a booklet, called 'Human Sexuality in Family Life' to help doctors and social workers attend these issues. Many dismissed it as a piece of pornography. "I used to find myself doing programs on sexual education without talking about sex," he says, with a smile.

When AIDS hits India in mid-80’s, the government was forced to become more open on sex. However, eliciting his concern over unprotected sex and youth getting sexually more active these days, he said, ‘I still feel health professionals and social workers are not doing enough to educate people."

Dr Watsa presently writes for a city tabloid.
