ME News Bureau: Sanath Jayasuriya, a legendary Sri Lankan Cricketer and the most destructive batsman of his era, who was once a nightmare for the opposition bowlers and used his batting brutality to rip apart the best bowling sides, now struggling to put a foot forward.

The 'Matara Marauder' is currently suffering from a knee injury so that he is unable to walk without crutches.

The 48-year old who also served as the chairman of selectors post-retirement will be going to Melbourne for treatment. The entire treatment will take up to one month and Jayasuriya will remain under observation during this period.

Sanath Jayasuriya, along with wicket keeper Romesh Kaluvitharana, had introduced a new way of game which was uncharacteristic for the cricket world during those days as they took assault on the opposition bowlers in the first 15 overs and raised the run rate to a high with a flurry of boundaries.

This technique was unveiled in the 1996 World Cup where the bowlers ran out of ideas to stop the run flow where as the journey of Lankans ended up in becoming the new world champions.

Jayasuriya played 110 tests, 445 ODIs and 31 T20Is and remains the second highest run getter for the island nation in ODIs with 13,364 runs including 28 centuries and 68 fifties at an average of 32.51.

The opening batsman also displayed his all-rounder skills as well during his two decades of international cricket as he claimed 323 wickets in ODIs, 98 in Tests and 19 in T20Is.
