Media Eye News Bureau: Shah Rukh Khan received an award at the World Economic Forum in Davos for raising awareness about human rights and his work for acid attacks victims. Cate Blanchett and singer-songwriter Elton John received awards at the World Economic Forum as well.

SRK is a founder of a non-profit named Meer Foundation, which provides support to female victims of acid attacks and major burn injuries through medical treatment, legal aid, vocational training, rehabilitation and livelihood support. He has been actively involved with the creation of specialised children’s hospital wards and has supported child care centres with free boarding for kids undergoing cancer treatment as well.

While receiving the award, he said, "We, the powerful, need to get out of the way, to pick the barriers apart, the ones that give us names and races and colours and hierarchies.” He added, “I want to thank my sister, my wife and my little daughter for bringing me up well and teaching me the value of requesting, sometimes imploring and begging a yes from a woman, instead of forcing it upon her.”

Cate Blanchett received a Crystal Award for her work with people who have fled their homes while Elton John received his for his charitable work with his AIDS foundation.
