Media Eye News Bureau: Fire broke out at Tamil Nadu’s Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple on Friday night and almost 40 shops were destroyed. The fire was contained after a five-hour operation by the fire and emergency services. It has been reported that the temple has now been reopened to devotees and also that there were no human casualties or injuries.

The fire is suspected to have started in a toy store inside the thousand pillar hall around 10 pm. An investigation for the same is underway.

Devotees have also reportedly alleged that the temple was vulnerable to an incident of this nature as no fire safety measures were taken to prevent it. However Madurai collector Veera Raghava Rao asserted that although there are no modern fire safety system with sprinklers at the temple, they have a dedicated fire engine stationed in the complex.
