Media Eye News Bureau: NCP chief Sharad Pawar recently said that no government has the right to interfere in Islamic laws related to talaq (divorce) as they have been specified in the Quran. He asserted that, “Talaq is a way provided by the Quran in Islam. It's a message, and no ruler has the right to interfere with that.”

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017 was passed by the Lok Sabha and according to its draft law, instant triple talaq would result in the husband serving a jail term of three years. The bill however was not passed in the Rajya Sabha as the opposition demanded that it be sent to a parliamentary panel for detailed scrutiny.
