Media Eye News Bureau: Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to the Congress for trying to find faults with his government's version of the triple talaq law in the Rajya Sabha. The Congress had slammed the proposed law that of banning triple talaq.

The Muslim Women Protection of Rights in Marriage bill was drafted by the NDA government last year to make triple talaq a criminal offence and had proposed up to three years in jail as punishment for a Muslim man who seeks to divorce his wife by saying ‘talaq’ thrice.

The bill although cleared the Lok Sabha, was held after the Congress and other opposition parties insisted on sending it to a parliamentary committee for review and had also argued that if a man who abandons his family goes to jail, will not be able to provide for them.

Responding to the argument, PM Modi said the same logic could be applied to argue against any criminal law. He stated, “If a Hindu marries twice, he goes to jail. There should be punishment for him. You did not think how his family will survive. Is there a punishment?”
