SIES College gets autonom

The Governor of Maharashtra and Chancellor of Mumbai University C. Vidyasagar Rao, awarded the autonomous college certificate to the SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce  principal Dr. Uma Shankar at a function held at the college campus, Sion. The vice Chancellor of Mumbai University Mr. Suhas Pednekar and the president of SIES Dr. V. Shankar were also present on the occasion.

The governor lauded the college for its contribution to the State and the country by adopting a tribal village in Karjat  in Raighad district and brought about an integrated development of the village.

The college secured autonomous status from the University Grants Commission from 2018-19 to 2027-28.

“As a Governor, I have special responsibility for the welfare of scheduled areas and therefore I welcome this initiative of the college wholeheartedly.” he said. Through such initiative, we also sensitize students about the socio-economic problems of society. This initiative is worth replicating by other colleges, he added.

“The Hon’ble Prime Minister has promised Rs.10,000 crore and autonomy to 20 universities – 10 public and 10 private to compete globally and emerge as the world’s

best institutions”, the governor said.

"The governor lauded the proposal of the government to set up the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) which has the potential to reform drastically higher

education in India. A huge focus will be there on academic quality with emphasis on improving learning outcomes, evaluation of academic performance by institutions,

mentoring of institutions, training of teachers, use of technology and so on" , Mr.Vidyasagar Rao said.

Earlier, the governor inaugurated a renovated library named after the former principal Late Prof. S. Ramanathan.

Dr. V.Shankar, president of SIES in his welcome address said the autonomy may be a certification of the potential for excellence, but it brings along with it added responsibility to meet the greater expectations of the students.
