A huge explosion followed by fire broke out at a refinery of the BPCL (Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited) at Mahul Road in Chembur. After the explosion in Gavan Goan at 2.45 pm, the level-III fire then broke out at the hydrocracker plant of BPCL refinery. To settle down the fire nine fire tenders, two foam tenders, and two tankers were rushed to the spot.
In this mishap 21 people were injured. The residents near the BPCL refineries in Chembur had claimed that they knew that such mishap could occur anytime. They had also filed a case regarding shifting the residents to another place due to the unsafe surroundings. While explosion the building was all shaken, the doors and the windows were all cracked. All the people ran from the building in a hurry to secure them from any other mishap. The residents also complain of being unsafe to stay and asking the responsible authorities to take the needful actions.
