Heavy rain kills 26 in Ke

Heavy rain stays on in many parts of Kerala as the Meteorological department anticipates high intensity rain for the next 48 hours in Central Kerala and northern districts. The heavy rain wreaked havoc in the state, biggest in "50 years", killed 26 people while red alert was issued for the Idukki water reservoir, the gates of which was opened yesterday after 26 years.

The army, navy and the NDRF teams have been working extensively in the river bank regions to avert any further damage and they are working on a war basis as more amount of water opened from the Idukki dam. Many places were affected in landslides yesterday along with the heavy rain, which doubled the devastating rain effects.

A 15-member team of the NDRF team has brought in Wayanad yesterday in a helicopter. Another team of 48 men arrived at Wayanad today morning while two teams of 28-men each have started working in Malappuram and Kozhikode respectively.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan yesterday and offered all assistance to the state. Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi Palaniswamy announced a financial assistance of five crore rupees to rain affected Kerala.
