Anna Canteens, who supplied the poor and the middle class with meals at Rs. 5, was shut down from Thursday across Andhra Pradesh. Daily wage-workers, beggars who daily thronged the canteens discovered the canteens locked.
With the outsourcing agency preventing food supply following instructions from the state government, all 204 canteens were down their shutters.
However, the government of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has ensured that this shutdown is temporary and that with certain changes it would restart the system.
Working since last year's July-August, the canteens proved a blessing to the needy as they each had breakfast, lunch and dinner at Rs. 5.
