The Delhi cabinet has approved the establishment of 11,000 Wi-Fi hotspot zones in the city that would allow users of smartphones and computers to access free internet services within a 50 m radius, said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday.

The project will be carried out by the Department of Public Works (PWD) of the government.

In the run-up to the 2015 assembly elections, free Wi-Fi in government areas was one of the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) poll commitments. The party went to power with a majority whooping, but despite numerous attempts, the flagship project never started.

The project was provided a new boost early this year as the party begins preparing for the next assembly elections, probably to be scheduled for early 2020.
