Dhaka: Bangladesh Health Department has begun nationwide vaccination drive to control Cholera to stop spreading the disease which is infecting thousands of people every year in the country. 

First dose of oral vaccine administration started from Wednesday to February 25 at six high cholera-prone areas of Dhaka for 1.2 million people, reports Efe News. 

The second dose will be administered to the recipients of the vaccine a month later.

Shahnila Ferdous, the health services director for communicable disease says this is the first time the country has taken a vaccination program and vaccination administered to all in the country at different phases. And the Vaccine is WHO’s pre-qualified cholera vaccine not available from any sector.

Health Department says they do not have any official data of cholera patients in the country, but by the report of International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research published in 2014 it is estimated that 66 million people of the country were at the risk of cholera. The report estimated 109,052 cases and 3,272 deaths annually by cholera.
