Chinese hackers behind Mumbai s power failure in October 2020

As per Recorded Future, Massachusetts-based company’s report the massive power outage that Mumbai faced last year could be due to Chinese cyber campaign against India. This was perhaps a warning by China to India on what could happen if the country pushed its border claims too vigorously in the context of the standoff at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh.

Although the US based firm cited heightened efforts by Chinese groups against Indian organizations, the campaign gained momentum following the confrontation in Ladakh and the violent clashes in Galwan that killed 24 soldiers.

Last year, the grid failure in Mumbai resulted in huge power outages leading to trains being stopped on tracks, stalling activities of people working from home during the coronavirus pandemic and temporarily stopping other activities.

It took nearly two hours for power supply to resume for essential services leading to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray ordering an inquiry into the incident.

Several media reports also suggested that power failure was a result of sabotage by foreign entities. The government’s enquiry into the incident is expected to be completed soon. The Ministry of Power meanwhile confirmed that there was no data breach from that incident.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson however tweeted: As staunch defender of cyber security, China firmly opposes & cracks down on all forms of cyber-attacks. Speculation & fabrication have no role to play on the issue of cyber-attacks.Highly irresponsible to accuse a particular party with no sufficient evidence around.
