Clean Chit To Modi  From Nanavati Panel on 2002 Riots

Wednesday,11 December 2019 08:05 AM IST

NEW DELHI: The 2002 Gujarat Riots Report of the Nanavati Commission gives the state government a clean chit, then headed by Narendra Modi, who has been India's prime minister since 2014. Action should be taken against the police who were unsuccessful in managing crowds and did not demonstrate the "competence required" to do so, the report tabled at the Gujarat assembly on Wednesday, five years after it was introduced to the state government. "There is no evidence to show that these attacks were either inspired or instigated or abated by any state minister," the commission said in its nine-volume report, which added up to more than 1,500 pages. Retired Justices GT Nanavati and Akshay Mehta had in 2014 submitted their final report on the 2002 riots in which over 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed.
