Former Chief Election Commissioner TN Seshan Dies

Chennai: Former Chief Electoral Commissioner T N Seshan, who had become an icon of Indian bureaucracy to initiate tectonic reforms in the electoral process of the country during his tenure in the 1990s, died of a cardiac arrest in Chennai on Sunday. He was 86. Between 1990 to 1996, TN Seshan, a former 1955 batch Indian Administrative Service Officer from the Tamil Nadu Cadre, headed the election commission. He is credited as India's 10th Chief Electoral Commissioner with flexing the far-reaching constitutional powers of the polling body to hold politicians in place.
