Thiruvananthapuram: A 12-year-old girl was crying as she was stopped this morning on her way to Kerala's Sabarimala shrine, while her family were reportedly being asked to go without her. The girl is being led away by a police woman at the Pamba base camp, about 9 km away from the shrine. Her father tried to comfort her with the police and explanation, but nothing helped. The Kerala government remained uncommitted to protecting women and girls between the ages of 10 and 50 who are no longer barred from visiting the shrine after a Supreme Court order but were unable to do so because of the stiff opposition of priests, rightwing activists and even some political parties.
