Varanasi: Another small-scale Banaras (Varanasi) industry in Uttar Pradesh will get a GI tag. Others include Banaras Paan and Banaras Langda Mango, to name a few.

This time, recognition will be given to the idols of Ganesha and Lakshmi, made with sticks and soil from the river Ganga. They are called Tili Wale Ganesh-Lakshmi’.

With the initiative of the Government of India, the documents are filed and under process.

GI Tag expert Padmashree Rajnikanth said that the idols of Ganesha and Lakshmi with sticks are made only in Banaras, and their demand is high in Purvanchal (eastern UP) and Maharashtra. These idols are special because they are made of clay from the Ganga. Sticks are put on top of it and given the shape of a crown.

In Banaras, it is mostly seen during Diwali and Dhanteras. Along with this, the people of the Maratha community keep it at home and worship (the idols) during the Ganesh festival.

This idol is considered pure, but with time, this workmanship has become limited to a few artisans.
