Tesla may set base in Gujarat

World’s leading electric car manufacturer Tesla recently announced its India entry with an R&D unit in Bangalore. Tesla would begin selling its cars in 2021 starting with its highest selling Model 3 followed by the premium Model S and Model X, next year.

Meanwhile, Gujarat, which has been a preferred destination for global automotive companies, is wooing Tesla to set up base in the state. Tesla officials are holding talks with few state governments including Gujarat for its India operations. Gujarat government is ready to extend all possible incentives and assistance for the company to set up its bas in the state.

An official privy to the developments told media that Gujarat is a recognized automobile hub, many vehicle battery manufacturers are based in Gujarat and the state government is hopeful that Tesla like other automobile companies would prefer Gujarat for its operations.

Tesla which has a registered office in Bangalore hasn’t yet revealed the prices for Indian market. Industry analysts said that Tesla’s entry could be a game changer for the Indian e-vehicle market, spur new mobility startups and fasten the development of electric vehicle infrastructure in the country.

In terms of geography, Gujarat is strategically placed with access to ports and all major markets in India. As per India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) report electric vehicle market is likely to reach 63 lakh unit mark by 2027 and the demand for batteries is going to increase during the period. All these developments bode well for electric vehicle manufacturers in India the long run.
