India pips US to become 2nd largest 5G mobile market

New Delhi: According to reports, India has overtaken the United States as the world’s second-largest 5G handset market for the first time, second only to China. This significant growth in India’s 5 G market is indicative of the country’s increasing technological prowess and its potential to influence global market trends.

According to Counterpoint Research, global 5G handset shipments increased 20% (year on year) in the first half of 2024. Apple topped 5G handset shipments, accounting for over 25% of the total.

Samsung came in second, with more than 21% market share, thanks to the Galaxy A and S24 series. Apple and Samsung each claimed five slots on the top-10 list of 5G models in the first half of 2024, with Apple grabbing the top four.

Other emerging markets had a significant increase in 5G handsets. Consumers in emerging nations are considering 5G handsets as an upgrade to their existing devices, especially in the lower price range.

Asia-Pacific and MEA: The Powerhouses of 5 G Asia-Pacific, with its 63% contribution to worldwide net additions and 58% of 5G shipments, and MEA, with its double-digit increase in 5G handset shipments, are playing a significant role in the global 5 G revolution.

According to Research Director Tarun Pathak, as the democratisation of 5G devices increases, as does 5G adoption in lower price categories and network development, this trend will continue to grow.
