New Delhi: Amid a national outcry over the death of Anna Sebastian, a 26-year-old Ernst & Young (EY) employee, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi spoke with her parents on Saturday and promised to fight for her cause.

He also promised to reduce the poisonous work culture in business workplaces.

Rahul Gandhi spoke to Sebastian’s parents via video call. He expressed his condolences to the family on her untimely death, according to a statement from the All India Professionals’ Congress (AIPC).

He praised the family’s fortitude and selflessness in speaking up at a difficult time about this subject, which was part of the wider cause of improving working conditions for millions of professionals across the country.

The Congress MP further informed them that he will fight for this cause as Leader of the Opposition.

Sebastian Perayil, a chartered accountant (CA) from Kerala, began working at Ernst&Young’s (EY) Pune branch early this year and died just four months later, in July, of “intense work pressure”.

Her mother, Anita Augustine, wrote to EY India chairman Rajiv Memani last month, expressing concern about the high workload at the firm’s offices and how it was affecting young people’s lives.

“Rahul instructed the AIPC to create an awareness movement in Anna’s memory for all working professionals in India,” said the AIPC chief Praveen Chakravarty in a press statement.

He further stated that Rahul has directed the development of a helpline to solicit feedback from corporate experts on issues linked to work stress and poisonous work culture.

Chakravarty stated that the AIPC will shortly announce draft rules for improving working conditions for corporate professionals.

Earlier in the day, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor expressed severe worries about the high-pressure work environment, particularly in corporate workplaces, and proposed a 40-hour work week.
