Sri Shankara Mattham celebrates Mahashivaratri

Mahashivaratri which means "The Great Night of Shiva" is one of the biggest Hindu festivals celebrated remembering the Lord on the Chaturdashi Tithi on the Krishna Paksha in the month of Phalguna of Maagha according to the Hindu calendar. Out of the 12 Shivaratri in the year, the Mahashivaratri is considered to be the most auspicious one.

At Sri Shankara Mattham, Matunga  the poojas started early morning with Rudra Japam and Homam in the morning and continued in the evening beginning with 1st Yama, Kramarchana. There are four Yaamas Abhishek aims till the next day morning continuously. The Shivalinga was bathed with Holy water, milk, dhahi , honey, Chandan and Bilwa leaves during these periods. On this night it is believed Shiva is said to have performed the Tandava Nritya, or the dance of primordial creation, preservation and destruction.

According to a legend, after the Earth was faced with imminent destruction, Goddess Parvathi pledged with Lord Shiva to save the world. Pleased with her prayers, Lord Shiva agreed to save the world on the pretext that the people of the Earth would have to worship him with dedication and passion. Shiva is considered as the ideal husband and unmarried girls and women pray for a husband like Him.

According to another popular legend, Maha Shivaratri is the night when Shiva performs the heavenly dance of creation, preservation and destruction.
