Kolkata: The West Bengal Health Department has issued a notification requesting specific information about all resident doctors from the state’s medical colleges and hospitals.

On Saturday, the state health agency sought registration numbers, Aadhaar and PAN numbers, mobile numbers, and academic record details. Non-practicing positions, such as resident medical officers and senior residents, prohibit them from engaging in private practice outside hospital duty.

The ongoing protest over the heinous rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run R.G Kar Medical College & Hospital on hospital grounds last month has significantly affected the medical fraternity. The state health department’s request for such information has caused ripples among its members.

Representatives of the medical fraternity consider the notification noteworthy, especially in light of the suspension of two resident medical officers and one senior resident doctor from two state-run medical colleges and hospitals. The three were close confidants of Sandip Ghosh, the former and controversial West Bengal Medical Council principal.

It is important to note that Ghosh, the former and controversial West Bengal Medical Council principal, is now in the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for his alleged involvement in the R.G. Kar financial irregularities case. This case has brought to light the potential financial misconduct within the medical fraternity.

There are numerous complaints filed against the two suspended resident medical officers and one senior resident. They are accused of harassing and threatening junior doctors while utilising their political clout as a cover.

The three suspended doctors are Avik De, a former resident medical officer (RMO) in Burdwan Medical College’s radiodiagnosis department; Dr Birupaksha Biswas, a former senior resident doctor in the same hospital’s pathology department; and Mustafizur Rahaman Mallick, a resident medical officer at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital.

The Supreme Court is set to hold a critical hearing on the heinous rape and murder on Monday. This hearing is of utmost importance, as it is expected that the CBI will provide a progress report on the case, which could significantly impact the ongoing situation.
