Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) personnel investigating the rape and murder of a lady doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital here are now focussing on what caused serious failures in the first investigation before taking over the case on the Calcutta High Court’s direction.

According to sources, central agency officials feel that the probing process would have gone considerably more smoothly if these lapses had been avoided during the first investigation before the CBI took responsibility.

The first lapse

According to reports, the first lapse was the lack of videography of the victim’s post-mortem process, as well as the mention of wounds on the body in the report.

According to sources, the forensic experts assisting the CBI team in the inquiry noted that the language employed in the post-mortem report was rather poor, which “conceals” rather than providing the crucial data.

The second lapse proved to be critical

The second point, according to insiders, is that CBI officials believe that a second post-mortem examination of the victim’s body would have been immensely beneficial to the investigation process because more details may have been revealed.

On this front, investigators are attempting to determine from the victim’s family members and close associates the circumstances under which the body was cremated in haste.

Sources indicated that this part of the probe has become critical in light of the victim’s parents’ assertions that administrative officials completely rejected their plea for the preservation of their daughter’s body.

By questioning the victim’s family members and close associates, CBI authorities hope to obtain information on the administrative and political figures who gathered at their residence before the cremation and at the crematorium.

A critical hearing on the heinous rape and murder is slated on Monday at the Supreme Court, during which the CBI is expected to provide a progress report on the case’s investigation.
