Chennai, June 26

Tamil Nadu special Police team has commenced probe in a fake passport network racket in the state after the arrest of a Bangladeshi citizen in Chennai.

The arrest was made on Friday. A special team has been constituted by the Tamil Nadu Police to ascertain whether more foreign nationals are residing in the state on fake passports.

Police team had arrested a Bangladesh citizen and a travel agent from Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) after they were found in suspicious condition.

On questioning they revealed their names as Ramjan Hussain of Bangladesh and Giridharan of Chennai.

Ramjan, according to police, had reached Chennai nine months ago and was working in a tea stall. He paid Rs 10,000 for a fake passport to Giridhar after getting Aadhar and PAN Cards from another source.

While the duo told the police that they don't have any accomplices in this, the special team is probing all angles as to whether Ramjan was the only person who got a fake passport through Giridhar or whether more such incidents had taken place.

There were intelligence reports on several Islamist groups trying to set up base in Tamil Nadu and the special team will be probing that angle also.

Sources in the police said that they have kept a vigil on several travel agencies in Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchi and Coimbatore on whether they are involved in fake passport rackets.
